From Uncertainty to Confidence: A Breastfeeding Journey Before Moving Abroad

CLIENT PROFILE

A second-time stay-at-home mum in her late 20s | Baby 2 weeks old | Staying in a small room at family’s place in Singapore, preparing to move abroad soon

SERVICE RENDERED

Postnatal breastfeeding support

(This service entailed a home visit and one week of text support, with ongoing check-ins over three weeks — all provided in Singapore.)

DESPITE HER DETERMINATION TO BREASTFEED THIS TIME, SOMETHING WASN'T QUITE CLICKING WITH HER NEWBORN:

  • Baby would latch and suckle briefly before falling asleep

  • Mum tried different positions and techniques without clear improvement

  • She questioned whether her baby was getting enough milk

  • The upcoming move added time pressure to resolve these concerns

WHAT DID OUR WORK LOOK LIKE

In our 90-minute 1:1 session at her home, we focused on what would help baby breastfeed more effectively and what would help mum feel more confident in the process:

• Helped baby latch more deeply so she could transfer milk more efficiently

• Found a comfortable feeding position for mum in her small bedroom, working with the space she had on her bed

• Encouraged her to offer the breast frequently and flexibly—not just for hunger, but to keep baby settled during this transition time

• Reframed what was going on so she could trust her instincts and explain baby's needs to family

We stayed in touch closely after the session — she sent updates and questions as things shifted, and I was there to walk alongside her as she kept experimenting.

THE OUTCOME

By the end of our initial consultation, this determined mum noticed immediate improvements:

  • Baby's latch became deeper and more effective

  • She began hearing more swallowing sounds during feeds

  • Her confidence in reading her baby's cues increased significantly

From her messages:

“Before you came, she really didn’t make swallowing sounds. I think I got a few more now.”

WHAT STOOD OUT FOR ME:

This mum's journey truly touched my heart! Her quiet determination shone through every step of the way—even with all the challenges around her.

Even though she could only nurse on a single bed in a tiny room at her family's place, she remained laser-focused on giving her baby the gift of breastfeeding.

What I found most beautiful was how she made breastfeeding work with what she had available. She didn't have a dedicated nursing chair or special setup, but that didn't stop her. She kept trying different ways to breastfeed around the clock, staying motivated by wanting her baby to have safe, nourishing milk straight from her.

Every time we connected, I could feel her confidence growing. Those small wins—hearing baby swallow, feeling a deeper latch, trusting her own instincts—they built upon each other day by day.

Her success wasn't about having the perfect setup (she definitely didn't!). It came from something much more powerful: her unwavering commitment to nourishing her baby directly from her body, paired with practical techniques that worked in her real-life situation.

Watching her journey from "Can I really do this?" to "I've got this!" was such a privilege. This is why I do what I do—supporting determined mums like her to find their way, even when the circumstances aren't ideal.
